Nara
Japan's original ancient capital โ where over 1,200 sacred deer roam freely among thousand-year-old temples and lantern-lined pathways.
Ancient Wonders and Sacred Wildlife
Nara was Japan's first permanent capital (710โ794 AD), and the city has been protecting its extraordinary cultural heritage ever since. Today it is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the magnificent Todai-ji temple with its colossal bronze Buddha โ the world's largest bronze statue.
What makes Nara truly magical, however, is its 1,200+ wild sika deer. Considered sacred messengers of the gods in Shinto belief, these gentle animals roam freely throughout Nara Park, bowing their heads to request shika sembei (deer crackers) from visitors. It is one of the most charming and unique wildlife encounters in all of Japan.

๐ฆ Deer Safety Tips
The deer are wild animals, despite their gentle demeanour. Keep food out of sight until you're ready to feed them โ they will become very persistent if they smell snacks! Avoid feeding deer crackers near young children, and be mindful that bucks can be more assertive during rutting season (SeptemberโNovember).
